Beyond Fashion

Upcoming

For a long time, fashion photography was seen as being exclusively commercial. In recent decades it has moved beyond the pages of a magazine, first into a wealth of book titles devoted to the topic and, more recently, into exhibitions like this one at SCoP, as art galleries and museums increasingly embrace visual culture in all its rich forms. Today, the art world fully accepts fashion photography, and all the creative photographic digressions the genre has inspired.

Fashion magazines were never made to last. Every month a new issue presented a new round of dreams to sell, resulting in hundreds of thousands of images annually. As concepts evolved, photographers moved their images away from a “hard sell” of the garments themselves. Instead, they began to focus on creative vision which, by playing with aesthetics in extraordinary ways, started to project narratives that reach beyond fashion.

In the 21st century, boundaries that once existed between editorial, advertising, and personal work are now blurred. Contemporary photographers rarely conceive of their work as fitting into a single category or medium. Digital media has also changed the way photography is consumed and shared. With the explosion of platforms on social media, fashion photography functions as a new visual language beyond the fashion it originally described.

Capturing this phenomenon, “Beyond Fashion” presents the work of highly acclaimed photographers, from Nick Knight to Paolo Roversi, the late Peter Lindbergh to Miles Aldridge, Juergen Teller to the legendary Ellen von Unwerth. All in combination with representative figures of the new generation like Blommers & Schumm, Solve Sundsbo, Daniel Sannwald, Viviane Sassen and Erik Madigan Heck. Together, they present a new vision of fashion photography that goes far beyond fashion.
